Sarah Griste Mugford

In this program I portray Sarah Griste Mugford, an unsung hero of the American Revolution. Born in Marblehead, Massachusetts, her father captained merchant ships. She married Captain James Mugford who was a captain himself and fought under General John Glover in the newly formed American Navy. Sarah Mugford was instrumental in not only freeing her husband from impressment in the Royal Navy, but her actions led to her husband’s capture of a large shipment of gunpowder that helped the severely under-armed Continental Army turn the tide of the American Revolution
Presented at the Marblehead Museum on September 23, 2023
In this program I portray a woman newly arrived at the poor farm, having lost her husband and income, she and her children find no alternative. I will talk of her preconceptions and tell the story of her change in perception. That everyone who came here had their own reasons, and while in theory they should be able to all work together, in this little “Utopia” many are there because whether they be elderly, physically unable or mentally unfit, no one else would take them. From this lens I will tell the stories of various “inmates” and what brought them there, as well as why they can’t pick themselves back up without the help of our communities.
